As an artist who's been writing and performing music for over twenty years—spanning several genres—Seattle-based singer-songwriter, novelist, and poet Alex Rasmussen has finally found a sonic home in his current musical incarnation: a unique blend of folk and rock inspired by life’s highs, lows, and every evasive emotion in between.

From the stomach-twisting rush of a whirlwind romance to the searing regret of habitual self-sabotage—from the Pacific Northwest to New Orleans, Tennessee to the Texas hill country—each of Alex’s songs is a mile marker along a potholed highway, driven with crossed fingers toward some sense of understanding.

His 2020-released EP, Make it Real, consists of five songs recorded in Los Angeles by Grammy-winning producer Sheldon Gomberg (Ben Harper, Lucinda Williams). The tracks feature a skilled cast of LA studio musicians, including Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek, who contributed violin and vocal harmonies to "Make a Living" and "Back to Nashville." Make it Real is available in the "music" section of this site and on all streaming services.

The Road LP (2017) contains two tracks ("Ghost in the Dark" and “Waiting”) recorded and mixed by Seattle grunge heavy-hitter, Tad Doyle.

Alex's novel, Coloring outside the Lines—based on experiences collected while street-performing between Seattle and San Francisco—is available here: https://www.amazon.com/Coloring-Outside-Lines-Alex-Rasmussen/dp/151962 His poetry collection, Inside out, can be found here: https://www.amazon.com/Inside-out-Alex-Rasmussen/dp/1790828384/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1548871756&sr=8-1&keywords=inside+out+alex+rasmussen

Reader's Rebellion

After a few months of toiling and tweaking, I'm excited to announce that I've got some new merch available on the site!

In the digital age, reading is an act of rebellion.

Scrolling can be entertaining, but after staring at my phone for too long, I feel dull and dumb.

To fight this ever-tempting cure for boredom, I usually carry a paperback wherever I go. Because if I have time for the screen, I have time to read.

While immersed in a book, we are collaborators, working with an author to co-create an imagined reality. And imagination, like a muscle, wastes away if left unused.

I can’t count the ways reading has improved my life.

In grade school, I devoured every Goosebumps story R.L. Stine released, using my mind to conjure monsters and demon-possessed Halloween masks.

Next, I dove into the Redwall series, where anthropomorphized creatures faced off in medieval-style combat.

My Stephen King chapter followed, which led to other authors, and now, at thirty-nine years old—after McCarthy, Morrison, Baldwin, O’Connor, and Vuong—my to-be-read list only continues to grow.

In addition to strengthening our capacity for imagination, reading increases attention span, lowers blood pressure, and cultivates empathy, which, if you’ve spent a millisecond in the modern world, you’ll agree is in short supply.

Also, if reading non-fiction, we might even learn something!

When I’m on public transit, at a park, or at the bar, for every fifty people who’re lost in their phones (myself sometimes included!), there’s often a single soul hallucinating via the drug of a dog-eared novel.

These people make me feel less alone.
They also give me hope.

If you’re one of the few and the proud—the reading rebel in a crowd of obedient screens—here’s a clothing design for you; a badge of honor available in t-shirts, hoodies, and tank-tops.

Thanks to Seattle-based polymath and all-around badass Sara Camille for bringing it to life!

Announcing the release of my second novel, In This Void

Time for a huge announcement…

It’s been difficult to keep my mouth shut for the last six months (except when I was blabbing in person), so I’m thrilled that I can now share this openly.

On June 24th, my second novel, In This Void, will be released through Seattle’s Chin Music Press.

The story follows a troubled musician who wrestles with his inner darkness while pursuing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that might finally bring fulfillment.

After nearly six years in the making, I couldn’t be happier with the way this book has come together, and I’m grateful to have found a solid teammate in this hard-working local publisher.

On this page you’ll find the back-cover copy and a few bits of early praise for the book. https://www.chinmusicpress.com/product-page/in-this-void-by-alex-rasmussen

To celebrate the publication, Chin Music and I will be hosting a performance at Folio: The Seattle Athenaeum on the evening of 6/21 featuring songs and spoken-word from several local musicians and writers.

If you plan on attending the launch party, you can select the “in-store pickup” option from the pre-order screen to get your hands the book a few days before its official release.

Let the countdown begin!

Becoming Visible (New Single)

I'm excited to announce the release of a new song, Becoming Visible, which is now live in the music section of this website and on all streaming platforms, including Spotify here:

https://open.spotify.com/track/5SVTrRCsDKrLlh2XIF9Cxt?si=xkjdpNYAQHqQMRdqBuOgzg

Becoming Visible is a creative experiment by Amy Laybourn and I. The song’s title comes from an anthology of twelve Seattle poets, including Amy (whose poem, The Turnaround, inspired the title). I curated the collection in 2023 and published it in February of 2024 with the help of Common Meter Press. For the release party at the Rabbitbox Theatre, in Seattle's Pike Place Market, Amy and I crafted this tune with the intention of commemorating the publication and bringing the evening of poetry readings to a musical conclusion.

During the songwriting session, Amy had the unique idea of taking lines from various poems and fitting them like melodic puzzle pieces into the song’s chrodal framework. This approach worked surprisingly well as, with the exception of a few lines, all lyrics came directly from the book.

Poets whose words are woven into the tune include Owl Scarey, Lucas Van Linden, Oscar Mejia, Nick Zettell, Erin Roth, Hailey Magee, Henry Wong, Alex Rasmussen, and Gemma Maliszewski.

The song is about stepping out of the darkness of fear and doubt, and using one’s unique experience—no matter how painful—to propel you toward a bright new future.

Recorded and mixed at Vertigo Studios in Seattle, WA, by Brad Kaminski.
Mastered by Blake Bickel of Dynamic Sound Service in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Bass: Dune Butler

Harmony Vocals: Fae Wiedenhoeft

Crawl

My new single, Crawl, is now alive on this site and all streaming platforms.

Written for a family member who has wrestled with substance abuse for over a decade, the song is about being there for someone who feels like giving up on themselves.

The first chords and words came after one of many relapses. As their cycle of self-destruction continued over the following years, the rest of the tune took shape.

Sometimes the two of us have the same shoulder-to-cry-on phone call we’d had three weeks prior; sometimes they're enjoying fulfillment and clarity during long seasons of sobriety; sometimes by the end of a roller coaster conversation, they swear off alcohol for good, only to then go radio-silent for a month as they crawl back into their poisoned hole.

This more-than-a-decade-long pattern of hope and defeat is exhausting, but, at this point, I feel like all I can do is hope…and offer love and guidance when they choose to reach out.

If a listener finds themselves offering support in a similar dynamic, I hope this song makes them feel like they aren't alone in their effort to heal the one they care about. If a listener is in need of comfort, I hope they can find some through this music.

Becoming Visible

I've been waiting patiently to make this announcement, and I'm thrilled that I can finally tell you.

Over the past eight months, I've been putting together an anthology featuring work from a skilled cast of Seattle poets, many of whom are also singer-songwriters in the local music scene.

Not only am I happy to announce the book's completion, but I'm also excited to be teaming up with Seattle / Portland publisher Common Meter Press on the release!

Here's the back-cover copy:
"Becoming Visible is a collection of poems by twelve Seattle-based writers. Each offers a unique perspective from their often-soggy corner of the country. From the whimsical wordplay of Gemma Maliszewski to the melancholy musings of Oscar Mejia, from Hailey Magee's erotic imagery to Lucas Van Linden's eloquent romanticism, this anthology contains something for everyone.
Like one's first taste of fresh Northwest salmon, or view of the majesty that is Mount Rainier (Tahoma), the words and ideas within will leave an impression that lasts long after the final page has been turned."

The book, which includes four unreleased poems from each writer, is now available for pre-order via the link below. (Until 1/31, you can enter the promo code BECOMING to get free shipping!)

On 2/18, we'll be celebrating the anthology's release with an in-the-round style performance at Seattle's Rabbitbox Theatre featuring a mixture of poetry and music (more details to come).

The following poets will be featured in the collection: (with their Instagram handles)

Good Things

My new single, Good Things, is for anyone struggling to maintain hope in the midst of challenging circumstances. For those putting one foot in front of the other, day after day—praying for progress, searching for light, and holding onto the belief that they’ll find a way out.

In January of 2022, I was bedridden by a health nightmare that made nerves in my hands, feet, and legs feel as though they were on fire. This was accompanied by several other symptoms; all of which, my doctors eventually determined, had been triggered by a widely recommended pharmaceutical procedure that had catapulted my immune system into an intense, self-targeting attack.

Luckily, in the months following my long-awaited diagnosis—through the courageous world of functional medicine—I was able to receive the treatment necessary to regain my active, fulfilling life. Now, almost two years later, each day without pain is a blessing, and I’m thankful I didn’t act on the nagging temptation to put a permanent end to my intense suffering.

While I was incapacitated and unable to work, most of my days were spent researching my novel condition, visiting doctors, and communicating with other people around the country who’d been injured by the same medical procedure. With almost all of my limited energy being directed toward healing, I did very little writing. Fortunately, the one song that did come out of this experience perfectly captured the duality of my thought process during the most harrowing challenge I’ve ever endured.

Good Things is a snapshot of a person trying desperately to find motivation and meaning while locked in a body that has become a painful prison.

Recorded, produced, and mixed at Vertigo Studios in Seattle, WA, by Brad Kaminski.

Drums - Bruce Weitz

Bass - Chase Baldwin

Guitar - Owen Thayer

Keys and Vocal Harmonies - Lucas Van Linden

Symptoms of the Night

My newest single, Symptoms of the Night, is now available for download in the music section of this site and streaming on all services!

I wrote the song years ago after catching myself over-thinking the magical process of falling in love rather than giving myself fully to the experience.

The violinist is a longtime friend and music instructor from Turkey named Gulay Sarbay who, like a comet, only passes through the United States once every few years. I was lucky to catch her on her most recent visit to record this song, which we've played live together any time she's been in Seattle.

Recording was done at Vertigo Studios in Seattle by producer / engineer Brad Kaminski, who also played piano and drums on the track. Vocal harmonies were contributed by Fae Wiedenhoeft of the Seattle-based Celtic folk band, Seastar. Mastering was done by Blake Bickel of Dynamic Sound Service in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Crawl

Due to health complications (from which I've been steadily healing), this year has been the most challenging of my life. Luckily, during my darkest moments, I had some wonderful people in my corner who helped me navigate the choppy waters. This song, Crawl, is about being there for someone in their time of need.

The video was filmed by Seattle-based singer, songwriter, and cameraman extraordinaire, Wyatt Olney.

Enjoy!

Sixteen Voices

Here's a video for an older tune of mine called "Sixteen Voices," shot, directed, and edited by the talented Wyatt Olney.

Enjoy!
